Clay brick is a circular building material that can reduce the materials footprint and CO2 emissions of the construction sector
Within the VLAIO Living Lab Circular Economy VAN AARDE NAAR WAARDE - Toepassing van Leemsteen in de praktijk, UHasselt, a2o-architecten, Democo, Buildwise, BrickZ and BC materials are exploring the application of clay brick in construction projects for three years.

By means of experimental research, real-life case studies and a demo project with social-ecological impact, we are investigating technical bottlenecks in the design and execution of clay brick masonry. We also question experiences and preferences of architects, contractors and building owners and take these into account when formulating design solutions. 

The focus is on co-creation and interaction with a broad group of actors, both students and researchers as well as building professionals and (future) building owners. During various events and through publications, we spread the acquired knowledge, demonstrate application possibilities of clay brick and want to inspire and sensitise a broad target group.
